March 28, 2013, 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm Donald B. Hamister Distinguished Lecture in Physics: Evalyn Gates, Cleveland Museum of Natural History
(Physics Colloquium Series)
Evalyn Gates, executive director and CEO of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, will present a public lecture titled "Portal to the Universe." Abstract: Museums are a unique portal connecting us to a deeper understanding of the world in which we live, from our own backyards to the most distant galaxies; an access point to the incredible discoveries we have made about the natural world; and a flashpoint for inspiring the next generation of explorers. They also serve a critical role as leaders in the effort to improve scientific literacy, which is essential in a democracy where we are called upon to make decisions that require a basic understanding of science, from new health technologies and how to best use them, to new sources of sustainable energy. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is thus poised to redefine what a natural history museum can - and should - be for both children and adults. Through its innovative programming, conservation and stewardship efforts, community outreach, and exhibits, the museum will serve as a platform for public discussions of current issues in science, and inspire visitors of all ages to explore the science of the natural world, offering an opportunity to travel through space and time to explore the origins of our planet, follow the evolution of life on Earth and project into - and plan for - the future. Reception to follow in the Gund Gallery's Fischman Lobby. Hosted by The Gund Gallery.
Location: Community Foundation Theater, Graham Gund Gallery
