February 15, 2013, 3:10 pm to 4:00 pm A Zookeeper's Guide to the Galaxy, by Natalia Connolly, Hamilton College (Physics Colloquium Series)Abstract: It's a jungle out there! A jungle of galaxies, that is. They come in all shapes and sizes; some have long winding arms, others are round and nearly featureless, some others have strange "bars" crossing their centers. How do we make sense of it all? With the help of volunteers from around the world, of course! A project called "Galaxy Zoo" was launched in 2007, when astronomers from Sloan Digital Sky Survey made millions of galaxies available online for anyone who was interested. Since then, tens of thousands of people have classified the galaxies by their appearance. In my talk, I will describe certain interesting statistical techniques that my group is using to data mine this rich data set. Surprisingly enough, we are finding that Facebook and studying galaxy evolution have something in common. Come find out what!
