"Angular Momentum of Rapidly Rotating Neutron Stars," by Luke Skon '13
(Physics Colloquium Series)
Please join us for Luke Skon's Senior Exercise talk.
Abstract: It is difficult to observe the behavior of nuclear material in extreme circumstances. The constraints of neutron stars is a good example. Neutron stars are gravitationally bounded, extremely dense and relatively cold. Given a specific equation of state, Einstein's Equations reveal the existence of a maximum value for the angular momentum. An RNS program was originally programmed in C in 1995. During this project, it was updated to C++ and an SQL database was constructed to store all of the data aggregated by the program. These updates improve the accuracy and increase the efficiency of parameter space searching. The project returned a value consistent with the theory about the minimum period of a neutron star.
