"Life in More than Three Dimensions," by Hillary Child '13 (Physics Colloquium Series)

Please join us for Hillary's honors talk.

Abstract: The universe is expanding, and that expansion is accelerating. No theoretical models have yet been able to explain why, but one possibility is that the field that describes gravity behaves differently on very large scales, as would be the case if our three-dimensional universe is only part of a higher-dimensional space: some of the influence of gravity would spread out into the other dimensions. Other theories in physics also raise the possibility of extra large dimensions. But how is it possible to test for the existence of dimensions that are larger than we can observe? I will explain how my simulations of scalar fields in the very early Universe can rule out certain models of large extra dimensions - or support their plausibility.
