Second Harmonic Generation is a second order non-linear optical effect wherein two incident photons interact on a material to create a single photon of twice the energy. The symmetry of crystalline silicon normally forbids second order interaction in the bulk; however, a dc electric field caused by trapped surface charges induces a third order effect which mimics the second harmonic. This is called Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic, or EFISH. By looking at EFISH from a sample, we can determine silicon doping concentration and type, as well as interactions with adjacently deposited films, in a non-damaging and non size limited way.
