Join us in the annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's legacy. The Chamber Singers will open the event, followed by a welcome from President Sean Decatur. The keynote speaker this year is the Most Rev. Michael B. Curry, the presiding bishop and primate of the Episcopal Church.
Curry, who was installed as head of the Episcopal Church in November 2015, is the church’s first African American leader and has long been active in issues of social justice, reconciliation, immigration and marriage equality.
The afternoon program will also feature a panel of faculty, students and staff who will discuss topics addressed in Curry’s speech.
Prior to the afternoon program, Knox County community leaders will gather for the 15th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Breakfast in Ariel Arena’s Foster Hall at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, 800 Martinsburg Road. Rev. Scott Elliott, pastor of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Mount Vernon, will serve as keynote speaker, and additional remarks will be given by Decatur, Mount Vernon Nazarene University President Henry W. Spaulding II, Mount Vernon Mayor Richard K. Mavis and Gambier Mayor Kachen Kimmel. The breakfast is free and open to the public; to RSVP, call Lorie Shults at 740-427-5846 or Jim Singletary at 740-397-9000, ext. 4606, by Jan. 12.
The Day of Dialogue program continues Tuesday, Jan. 16, with a viewing and discussion of the film “I Am Not Your Negro” at 7 p.m. in the Gund Gallery’s Community Foundation Theater, 101 ½ College Drive.
