A commanding and engaging presence increasingly in demand on the podiums of orchestras around the world, an actively performing clarinetist, and an impassioned advocate for the arts in education, Dr. Antoine Clark is the founding artistic and music director of the McConnell Arts Center Chamber Orchestra.
During summer 2017, Dr. Clark served as assistant conductor with the Gateways Music Festival at the world-renowned Eastman School of Music, assisting Maestro Michael Morgan and conducting a series of festival performances in Rochester, New York. He has also served as music director of the Wayne State College Orchestra in Wayne, Nebraska; assistant conductor of the Ohio State University Orchestra; and artistic and music director of the Capital City Chamber Players.
Earlier this year, Dr. Clark was named a winner in the International Conductor’s Workshop and Competition held in Atlanta. He also received a SphinxConnect Fellowship from the Sphinx Organization in Detroit and participated in a leadership conference focused on diversity in the arts. In 2016, Dr. Clark was selected from a pool of 160 applicants to audition as a finalist for the assistant conductor position with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. In a national search, he was also invited to audition for the assistant conductor position with the Jacksonville Symphony.
Dr. Clark has participated in prestigious conducting festivals and workshops around the world, including the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra Conductor’s Workshop, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic International Conductor’s Workshop, the International Conducting Masterclass in Olomouc, Czech Republic, and the Pierre Monteux Festival and School in Hancock, Maine. This summer he returned to the Pierre Monteux School and Festival for a third consecutive year, and participated in the University of Oregon Summer Conducting Workshop in Eugene, Oregon.
As an orchestral clarinetist, Dr. Clark has performed as principal clarinetist of the Dearborn Symphony in Detroit and the Ash Lawn Opera Festival in Charlottesville, Virginia. He has performed with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, the Harlem Symphony, the Soulful Symphony, the Sphinx Symphony, and he currently performs with orchestras around central Ohio, including as an associate musician with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.
Passionate about inspiring and nurturing the next generation of musicians, Dr. Clark has served on the faculties of Denison University, at Wayne State College and Randolph College. He currently teaches at Music Royale in Powell, Ohio, and serves as the adjunct instructor of woodwinds at Kenyon.
The 2017-18 season of the McConnell Arts Center Chamber Orchestra marks Dr. Clark’s fifth season as the orchestra’s artistic and music director.
